What do office plants cost?

Curious about the cost of office plants from a plant company? This blog breaks down typical budgets for various workspace planting features, from floorstanding pots to living walls. Whether you're adding greenery to desks, walls, or bespoke joinery, you'll find helpful estimates to make the most of your budget. Inside you'll find both purchase prices and the cost to hire office plants.

Intro

Budgets certainly aren't the most fun part of office planting. However, if we skip this step, you might do a lot of design work before realising you don’t have the budget you need. Hopefully, by addressing this up-front, we can make the most of your budget and get the most green for your green!

We’ll cover different types of planting features and what they typically cost. Do bear in mind that these are outline numbers and there's a lot of variations with spec, location, and type of planting. When your planting scheme tips the £10,000 mark, it's usually possible to achieve discounts thanks to economies of scale.

Office Plant Rental

As well as purchase pricing, we're also going to cover rental pricing. Renting office plants is the most cost-effective way to add greenery to your space. You spread the cost of ownership over a longer time, usually three years.

When you rent your plants from us at Plant Plan, we include the cost of maintenance and installation in your weekly rental cost. What's more, if a plant dies, we'll replace it free of charge.

Internal Floorstanding Planting

The most common type of planting is floorstanding pots. We’d recommend budgeting for clusters as they look much nicer than a lone plant! Working on a mixed height cluster of three pots, you should budget £700 - 1200 per cluster.

To break down plant purchase prices:

  • Large plants at 1800mm tall will cost £300 - 600

  • Medium plants at 1400mm tall cost £250 - 400

  • Small plants at 550mm tall cost £90 - 140.

Rental guide prices:

  • Cluster of three mixed-height pots: £10 - 15 per week

  • Large plants at 1800mm tall £3.70 - 5.50 per week

  • Medium plants at 1400mm tall £3.15 - 4.15 per week

  • Small plants at 550mm tall cost £1.6 - 2.05 per week

Small Internal Plants

In some spaces, for example, windowsills, desks, or shelves, you may want smaller plants. These can be excellent for increasing your plant-count without blowing your budget.

I have a small row of these beside my desk and they provide an excellent sight-line. For these, budget £30 - 60 per pot. They're also available in preserved options, like the image below.

To rent office plants of this size, you'd be looking at £1 - 1.30 per week per pot.

Inbuilt Planting

Planting incorporated into bespoke joinery looks amazing and can be used for so many different purposes. Giving pricing for inbuilt planters is hard, as bespoke joinery can range from straightforward to wildly creative.

Without details, we can only provide pricing for the planting within the joinery. You can then add this to the pricing from your joinery contractor.

If you’re after live inbuilt planting, you’d be looking at £150 - 350 per linear meter. We suggest budgeting the same amount for replica inbuilt planting. The cost depends on the type of replica planting you want.

Inbuilt planting rental will cost £2.70 - 4 per linear meter.

Internal Cabinet Trough Planting

Cabinet trough planting sits on office cabinets. The troughs usually match or complement the cabinets below them. Usually, it's best to get the troughs from your office furniture provider as they'll match your cabinets.

However, we can supply the liners. Getting those right is really important, as no one wants a leak here!

For internal cabinet trough planting, we'd recommend budgeting £125 - 200 per linear meter to purchase. For rental, budget £2 - 3 per week.

Ceiling Rafts

Ceiling rafts are a cost-effective way to bring greenery into your space. If we use replica planting in the ceiling grid, it will cost around £200 - 400 per m2. If we use preserved foliage, it will cost around 30% more.

If you’d like a frame around the edge of the ceiling raft, you’ll need to allow extra for this as it’s a bespoke item.

Living Walls

For living walls you can expect to pay between around £700 - 1500 per m2.

That sounds like a colossal range, which is because of the variety of systems available on the market. It depends on several factors. These include the location, whether it is indoors or outdoors. It also considers the need for an irrigation system and whether the wall needs extra lighting.

Access can add some cost too, with scaffolds or MEWPs bringing extra complexity and cost. Our staff are PASMA and IPAF trained which helps as we don't need to hire operators too.

Moss Walls

Moss walls cost between £350 - 550 per m2. The cost varies based on the type of moss you choose.

Bun Moss is the most expensive, Reindeer Forest Moss is in the middle, and Mixed moss is the least expensive. Incorporating preserved foliage into your moss wall will likely increase the price.

Again, other factors can also impact the cost, such as the need for a MEWP to ensure safe access at high levels.
