OSMO Building: the hanging gardens of London

Designed to reconnect people with nature, the OSMO Building in Battersea is a contemporary, flora-filled flexible office space with a Zero Carbon operation.

Client overview

The OSMO Building is a contemporary office space in Battersea, developed by Quadrant Estates in collaboration with Knight Frank. The project was designed by EPR Architects with a focus on biophilic design, aiming to create a flexible office environment filled with greenery. The building operates with Zero Carbon emissions and incorporates nature-inspired features to enhance well-being and sustainability.

The brief

The client requested a multi-layered, dynamic landscape that brings nature into every corner of the building. Inspired by notable biophilic projects like the Barbican Conservatory and Brooklyn Bridge Hotel, the objective was to create an environment where greenery is visible from every vantage point. The design needed to accommodate both living walls and floor planters, ensuring the flora thrived despite the building’s low light conditions

Challenges

The north-facing orientation of the building limited natural light, necessitating the use of supplementary lighting to support plant growth. Automated irrigation systems were integrated, planned in partnership with irrigation specialists to maintain the health of the wall planters. The weight of these planters also required detailed coordination with structural engineers to guarantee their safety and stability.

What we did

We installed Bucida bucheras trees in various locations to create focal points throughout the building. For the wall planters, a mix of species such as Lepisimum bolivianum, Rhipsalis cassutha, and Philodendron scandens was used to create lush vertical gardens. Floor planters featured large, vibrant plants like Strelitzia nicolai, Monstera deliciosa, and Schefflera arboricola, adding depth and variety. The irrigation and lighting systems were seamlessly integrated to ensure the longevity and vibrancy of the greenery.

Outcome and feedback

The OSMO Building successfully achieved a dynamic, multi-layered biophilic environment, aligning with the client’s vision of reconnecting people with nature. The lush, green interiors have become a highlight, providing a calming and visually engaging atmosphere for occupants. The innovative use of automated systems and strategic plant placement not only met aesthetic goals but also ensured the plants thrived in the challenging environment, supporting the building’s Zero Carbon operations.
