We often get people asking “why should we have plants in our offices?”. It’s a good question, and there are three main reasons why office plants are a worthwhile investment and important in creating a great workplace. We’ve listed them out below.
Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, plants will help reduce your costs. In 2016 137 million days were lost to sickness in the UK, costing UK businesses billions of pounds. Office plants have been proved to help reduce the effects of Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), and are a key player in producing a healthy indoor environment. Symptoms associated with SBS such as “dry or itchy skin or skin rash, dry or itchy eyes, nose or throat, headaches, lethargy, irritability, or poor concentration, and a stuffy or runny nose” according to the HSE. Plants contribute towards a healthier environment by removing toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene, which released by carpets, printers, desks, upholstery, and other man-made materials. Additionally they also help maintain humidity. In offices low humidity levels caused by air conditioning and heating cause colds, blocked noses, and skin irritations. Plants will release over 97% of water they absorb through their roots into the air from their leaves, helping to raise humidity levels in a room by 10 – 15%.
Secondly, introducing plants into offices have massive visual impact. A well designed planting scheme works in tandem with your office’s design, colour scheme, and space to build a well-matched, intelligent design that will complement the space and add colour and interest. Our professional designers work with you to select the correct planters for your office space from the huge range that we have available, selecting the type that will best meet the office’s design and your budget. Once the planters have been chosen we’ll work with you to choose plants that will both look great and thrive in the location, taking into account space and light levels, and the kind of look you wish to achieve.
Finally, we have a subconscious connection with nature that has been sadly neglected in office design. With the rise of biophilic design within the office design and architecture industries recognition for this vital element is increasing. University studies have proved there’s a link between including plants in offices and staff having a better mood, increased productivity, and improved creativity. By adding back in the link between nature and employees with office plants an environment where staff are positive, comfortable and happy is achieved. The effects of this are better output, decreased sickness, and lower staff turnover.
